West Valley’s Raby advances to quarterfinals at CIF State Wrestling Championships

West Valley High’s Rocky Raby is the lone Shasta County wrestler to stay alive in the championship bracket after the first day at the CIF State Wrestling Championships at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield Thursday.

Raby, a three-time Northern Section Masters champion and the No. 7 seed in the 154-pound weight bracket, won three matches to reach the quarterfinals. After going 0-2 at state last year, Raby pinned Devhante Hayes of Mira Mesa (San Diego Section #4) in 1 minute, 57 seconds, won by fall in 3:55 over Wesley Wilson of Morro Bay (Central Section #8) and won an 8-3 decision over #10 Seth Borba of Oakdale (Sac-Joaquin Section #2) in the Round of 16 to reach the quarterfinals. In addition to Raby, only two of the 28 Northern Section wrestlers have yet to lose at the tournament. Friday’s action begins at 9 a.m. with the consolation bracket while quarterfinals are scheduled to start at 3:45 p.m. East Nicolaus’ JT Stinson, the 170-pound No. 3 seed, went 3-0 and is in the quarterfinals. Durham’s Jacob Christensen, the top seed for 220 pounds, pinned all three of his opponents to reach the quarterfinals.

The other Northern Section wrestler to earn a win was Sutter’s Max Gipson at 195 but he lost his second-round match to fall to the consolation bracket.

Shasta County’s five other wrestlers — West Valley’s Conner Edwards (126), Foothill’s Earnest J. Wilson II (160), Foothill’s Jodeah Wilson (182), West Valley’s Cade Lambert (182) and Anderson’s Cody Crawford (220) — all lost their opening round match and fall to the consolation bracket.

Northern Section wrestlers went 9-25 overall on the day.

Sutter’s Hunter Ludwig was pinned in 3:03 by #16 Nate Gonzalez of Selma.

Chico’s Gavin Smith lost by tech fall 23-7 to #7 Ethan Perryman of Temecula Valley.

113 pounds

Orland’s Jonathan Garcia lost a 7-6 decision to Ryan Lobato of Chaparral (Southern Section #9).

Chico freshman David Rudkin lost by tech fall 15-0 to #14 Trenton Pagaduan of Yucaipa (Southern Section #6).

120 pounds

Sutter’s Brody Dollins lost by fall in 5:23 to #8 Laz Maldonado of Clovis West (Central Section #4).

Quincy’s Russell Nickerson lost a 10-8 decision to #11 Noah Ozuna of Bakersfield (Central Section #6).

126 pounds

Chico’s Rieker Pineda lost by major decision 15-5 to #16 Bryant Avila of Carter (Southern Section #6).

West Valley’s Conner Edwards lost by major decision 11-2 to #9 Ryan Watts of Clovis North (Central Section #5).

132 pounds

Chester’s Callum Kremer lost a 13-6 decision to #12 MJ Gaitan of Temecula Valley (Southern Section #7).

Gridley’s Dallas Stevens lost a 6-2 decision to #3 Ryan Franco of Clovis North (Central Section #2).

Chester’s Bonner Montgomery lost by fall in 5:55 to #4 Joshua Medina of Servite (Southern Section #3).

Durham’s Zane Kowalkowski was pinned in 2:00 by #14 Tommy Beringer of Vista Murrieta (Southern Section #6).

145 pounds

Chico’s Alex Rudkin lost by tech fall 15-0 to #2 Aaron Gandara of Poway (San Diego Section #1).

Orland’s Brayden Schumann was pinned by #8 Oscar Aranda of St. John Bosco (Southern Section #4).

154 pounds

West Valley’s Rocky Raby won all three matches to reach the quarterfinals.

Corning’s Tristan Bailey lost by fall in 1:57 to #12 Trent Houle of Capistrano Valley (Southern Section #4).

160 pounds

Earnest J. Wilson II was pinned in 0:55 by #9 Jake Prudek of Caruthers (Central Section #3).

Durham’s Aaron Hernandez lost by fall in the third period in 5:27 to #2 Andrew Sparks of Calvary Chapel (Southern Section #2).

170 pounds

Orland’s Benicio Martinez lost a 2-0 decision to #8 Tate Bossert of Las Lomas (North Coast Section #1).

East Nicolaus’ JT Stinson reached the quarterfinals, going 2-0 on the day. The third-seeded Stinson won by tech fall 15-0 over Parker Chaffee of Serrano (Southern Section #8) and then won a 9-3 over Ryan Fiorentino of Clovis North (Central Section #7) to reach the quarterfinals.

182 pounds

Foothill’s Jodeah Wilson lost by fall in 2:42 to #3 Javen Jovero of Rancho Bernardo (San Diego Section #2).

West Valley’s Cade Lambert lost a 6-1 decision to #11 Justin Tripp of Mt. Whitney (Central Section #3).

195 pounds

Orland’s Joel Lopez lost a 4-0 decision over #5 Josh Harkey of Dana Hills (Southern Section #4).

Sutter’s Max Gipson went 1-1 on the opening day. The Masters champion won by fall in 1:19, upsetting #10 Paul Sharp of Clovis North (Central Section #3). Gipson lost a 7-2 decision to #7 Trevor Tinker of Northview (Southern Section #4).

220 pounds

Anderson’s Cody Crawford was disqualified in his opening match during his state debut to #10 Matt Kovalskiy of Folsom (Sac-Joaquin Section #4).

Durham’s Jacob Christensen, the top seed for the bracket, won all three of his matches by fall to reach the quarterfinals. Christensen pinned Hayden Pulis of Hanford (Central Section #5) in 2:13, pinned Dominic Smith of Vintage (North Coast Section #2) in 4:00 and pinned #16 Matthew Fee of Fountain Valley (Southern Section #5) in 2:35.

285 pounds

Corning’s Dillon Bailey lost by fall in 1:44 to #9 Arturo Ojeda of San Jacinto (Southern Section #2).

Live Oak’s Jon Widener lost by fall in 3:48 to Andrew Johnson of Poweray (San Diego Section #1).
