West Valley wins boys, girls NSCIF D-II track and field championship

West Valley won both the Northern Section Division II boys and girls track and field championships Thursday at Orland High School.

For the boys, the Eagles turned in 159.5 points with five event wins, ahead of U-Prep (142), which won seven events. Wheatland (73.5), Sutter (39) and Orland (36) followed, respectively. Central Valley was seventh (9 points) and Anderson and Yreka were tied for eighth with six points apiece.

In the girls, West Valley won nine events and collected 202 points, besting U-Prep (151). Yreka (48) was third, Orland (33) was fourth and Sutter and Wheatland (20) tied for fifth. Anderson was tied for seventh with Gridley with 10 points.

Below are the top performances from the D-II championship meet. The winner of each event advances to the Northern Section championships on Friday at West Valley High School while some will earn at-large bids depending on how well others did in the D-I, III and IV championships.

100: U-Prep’s Damon Uribe won with personal record of 11.38 seconds, edging Lassen’s Nathan Acosta (11.39). U-Prep’s Ryan Goates was third (11.59).

200: U-Prep took the top three places with Uribe winning in 23.14. Panthers’ Quinn Danner-Bocks was second (23.23) and Goates was third (23.63).

400: Danner-Bocks won the event in a personal record 49.64, edging Orland’s Matthew Hernandez (50.84) and West Valley’s Dagan Johnson Sanders (51.24).

800: Wheatland’s CJ Duncan won in 2:03.83, folowed by West Valley’s Marcus Francescut (2:08.62) and U-Prep’s Jacob Matties (2:08.78). U-Prep’s Christian Lane (2:09.79) and West Valley’s Felipe Sobrino (2:10.86) was fifth.

1,600: Sutter’s Bailey Rockhold won in 4:41.09, beating West Vallley’s Fancescut (4:43.76) and U-Prep’s Justin Matties (4:44.09).

3,200: U-Prep’s Matties won in 10:24.97 for a season-best mark, well-ahead of Sutter’s Rockhold (10:32.14) and Lassen’s Deric Davenport (10:44.60).

110 hurdles: West Valley’s Daniel Dickerson won in 15.21 seconds, ahead of U-Prep’s Cooper Overton (16.05) and Wheatland’s Manny Galvan (16.22). U-Prep’s Nate Friensen (16.92) and West Valley’s Marco Thomas (16.92) rounded out the top five with PRs.

300 hurdles: U-Prep’s Overton won in 41.22, beating Dickerson (41.51) and Galvin (43.20). U-Prep’s Friesen was fourth in 44.34.

4×100 Relay: U-Prep’s team of Overton, Ethan Poole, Uribe and Danner-Bocks won in 44.37 seconds, ahead of Orland (44.82) and West Valley’s team of Justin Heese, Cade Lambert, Lambert Salvatierra and Johnson Sanders (45.11).

4×400 Relay: U-Prep’s team of Matties, Uribe, Overton and Danner-Bocks won in 3:29.22. West Valley’s Dickerson, James Salvatierra, Lambert and Johnson Sanders (3:31.16) was second, Wheatland third (3:42.45) and Anderson’s Kolton Pardee, Gavin Smith-Porst, Jacob Galvan and Jordan Kotera fourth (3:47.33).

Shot Put: Wheatland’s Michael Sappa won with a throw of 50-5.5, beating West Valley’s Payton Fuller, who set a season-record of 46-0. West Valley’s Anthony Rogers was third (45-11.5) and U-Prep’s Aiden McFadden was fourth (44-9.25).

Discus: West Valley’s Fuller won with a throw of 144-7, beating Wheatland’s Sappa (139-5) and Chris Soderlund (133-0).

High Jump: West Valley’s Bennett Gooch won with a jump of 5-10. West Valley’s Rogers was second (5-8), Orland’s Evven Ovozco was third (5-8), and U-Prep’s Patrick Kremer and Jacob Pewitt both jumped 5-6 to round out the top five.

Pole Vault: West Valley’s Chad Cooper won with a height of 13-0. Central Valley’s Ricky Sanderson hit a PR of 12-6 for second and West Valley’s Matt Nehls was third (12-0).

Long Jump: Sutter’s Daiven Atwal set a PR at 21-5.5 to win the event, beating West Valley’s James Salvatierra’s PR of 20-10 and Lambert Salvatierra’s 20-0 mark. U-Prep’s Kremer was fourth (18-5) and West Valley’s Gooch was fifth (18-2.5).

Triple Jump: Lambert Salvatierra hit a personal record of 42-9 to win. Sutter’s Atwal was second (41-7), followed by West Valley’s James Salvatierra (39-7.75) and Gooch (39-3).

100: Yreka’s Alisha McFall won in 12.61, ahead of U-Prep’s Lexi Jones (PR of 12.79), West Valley’s Isabella Alvarez (12.98) and U-Prep’s Millie Odurukwe (13.43).

200: McFall edged Jones by 0.04 seconds for the division championship title. McFall ran in 26.93 and Jones 26.97. West Valley’s Alvarez was third (27.29) and U-Prep’s Odurukwe was fifth (29.30).

400: West Valley’s Bailey Jones won in 1:00.65, beating Alvarez (1:01.86), U-Prep’s Sami Isheim (1:02.72) and Anderson’s Adrian Bartlett (1:06.68), who finished second through fourth, respectively.

800: West Valley’s Bailey Jones won in 2:27.35, U-Prep’s Gracy Gaddy (2:28.54) was second and West Valley’s Jasee Jeacock was third (2:35.85).

1,600: U-Prep’s Gaddy set a personal record in 5:18.31 to win well-ahead of Sutter’s Mia Ashby (5:26.05) and West Valley’s Heacock (5:32.13). U-Prep’s Becca Gaido (5:35.80), Serena Tate (5:36.69) and Hannah Cusworth (5:41.34) were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

3,200: U-Prep had the top three finishers with Gaido winning in 12:19.02, followed by teammate Cusworth (12:23.40) and Tate (12.27.53).

100 hurdles: U-Prep’s Audrie Reuss set a PR in 16.04 to win the event. West Valley’s Maddie Steele was second (17.26) and Yreka’s Makenna Sexton was third (17.29).

300 hurdles: West Valley’s Bianca Jones won with a PR of 48.06, edging her teammate Steele (48.11). U-Prep’s Amber Anderson was fourth (52.23) and Anderson’s Adrian Bartlett was fifth (52.24) with a PR.

4×100 Relay: West Valley’s team of Samantha Finnegan, Bailey Jones, Bianca Jones and Alvarez helped the Eagles win in 50.56. U-Prep’s team of Makenna Sexton, Madison Kremer, Savannah Leak and Lexi Jones was third in 51.80.

4×400 Relay: West Valley team of Finnegan, Steele, Heacock and Bailey Jones won in 4:12.65. U-Prep’s team of Jordan McCoy, Grace Gaddy, Savannah Leak and Sami Isheim were second in 4:20.30.

Shot put: West Valley senior Natalie Rogers set a PR to win with a throw of 44-6.5. U-Prep’s Odurukwe was third with a PR of 35-3.5, followed by West Valley’s Jenna Adkins (PR of 34-7) and West Valley’s Hannah Wayne (33-7).

Discus: Rogers cruised to the title with a throw of 138-2, beating Wheatland’s Abby Meder (109-9) and West Valley’s Wayne, who set a season record of 109-0. U-Prep’s Kennedy Kremer was fourth (105-8).

High Jump: U-Prep’s Madison Kremer won with a jump of 5-0 while West Valley’s Mollie Wheeler set a season record of 4-8 for second and West Valley’s Aubree Carroll was third at 4-6.

Pole Vault: West Valley had the top three finishers with Kaitlyn Johnston (8-6) winning the event, followed by Destiny Valles and Carroll, who both cleared 8-0.

Long Jump: U-Prep’s Lexi Jones set a person record of 18-6 to win the event, jumping more than 2 feet farther than Orland’s Amber Kuth (16-3). West Valley’s Johnston was third (14-10).

Triple Jump: West Valley took the top three spots with Bianca Jones winning with a season record jump of 33-2.5. Steele set a PR for second at 31-10.5 and Carroll set a PR at 31-10. Anderson’s Averi Feusi was fourth (31-1).
