West Valley wins ‘Beast of the North’ tourney, Foothill has two champions

West Valley High’s wrestling team won the NorCal ‘Beast of the North’ 2019 wrestling tournament Saturday at Anderson High School.

The Eagles totaled 169.5 points, while Casa Grande (166.5) was second and Foothill (163 points) was third. Fortuna (119) and Shasta (115) rounded out the top five, respectively. Other Shasta County teams were Anderson (ninth, 108.5 points), Central Valley (18th, 65 points), U-Prep (23rd, 58 points), Enterprise (33rd, 35 points), Burney (41st, 8 points) and Fall River (42nd, 7 points).

West Valley had eight placers with one victory as Conner Edwards went 5-0 to win the 120-pound bracket by fall (4:29) over Trey Walters of North Valleys. Other notable finishes for the Eagles were a third-place finish from Rocky Raby (4-1) at 138 pounds, who won a major decision for third place over Brennan Brown of Windsor, and a third-place finish from Cade Lambert (5-1) at 182 pounds. Lambert won a 7-5 decision over Aidan Elko of Jesuit.

Foothill had seven placers with wrestlers winning their brackets. Cougars’ junior Chris Ostergren went 5-0 at 145 pounds, winning a major decision 20-9 over Jacky Hawkins of Phoenix (Ore.) in the championship match. Ostergren won three of his five matches by fall. Ernest Wilson won the 152-pound bracket, going 4-0 and finishing with a 5-4 decision over Kevin Hagy of Rio Americano. Cougars’ Jake Bergstrom lost a 7-2 decision in the 132-pound championship to take second and Colton Stone lost a 13-2 major decision to Marshall Hauck of Bishop Manogue for the 138-pound title.

Shasta had seven placers with Aaron Bailey taking second at 126s. Bailey lost by fall (4:40) to Chance Galvin of Modoc in the championship match. Aydin Facey was third at 152s, winning by fall (1:30) over Mike Walker of Phoenix for the third-place crown.

Anderson had five placers with Joe Carrillo leading the way by winning the heavyweight division. He won by fall (3:16) over Javier Contreras of Will C. Wood for the title. Cody Crawford was second in 195, losing a 3-0 decision to Reagan Dahle of Big Valley in the championship match. James Canfield was third, winning a 6-0 decision over Alex Rivera of Will C. Wood to go 5-1 in the tournament.
