Most teams used the slow one-game week in the midst of league play to rest up and re-energize for the final stretch run.
Not Fall River. The Bulldogs looked to get more out of their late season push, which is why they added an extra upper division squad to the slate and took care of business.
Fall River pounded a D-IV Yreka squad 53-35 before crushing D-V Mount Shasta 58-40 last week to earn Tri Counties Bank Girls Basketball Team of the Week honors.
The Bulldogs picked up solid victories that will help with their strength of schedule when it comes time for playoffs. Already sitting at 16-4 on the year and riding a six-game winning streak since the loss to division foe Redding Christian, Fall River is positioning itself for a top-two seed and home court advantage through to section championship weekend Feb. 28-29.
Marissa Leighton led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds against Yreka and fellow senior Alexis Easley contributed 11 points as the Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the field. In the win over Mount Shasta, Fall River trailed by two entering the fourth quarter but outscored the Bears 24-4 in the final period to keep the winning streak alive. Wins like that can be a confidence booster when games get tight in the postseason.
Fall River, tied for 14th in the latest Northern Section Power Rankings — regardless of division — has its biggest game of the year up next with a home game against Etna on Tuesday for the top spot in the Shasta Cascade League standings and the inside track to the SCL title.
Leighton is leading Fall River in scoring and rebounding on the year with 11.9 points and 6.1 boards per game.
