Jenna Adkins is finding a groove. And that’s dangerous for Northern Athletic League opponents.
Adkins, a 6-foot senior forward, had the tournament she needed to finish up preseason play by averaging 13 points and eight rebounds over the three games to be named the Tri Counties Bank Girls Basketball Player of the Week for Week 6.
Adkins scored in double digits for three consecutive games for the first time this season, though she’s only logged 10 games. She had 12 points and eight boards in a 67-31 win over Pierce. The night after, Adkins dominated Sutter in the third quarter to score eight of her 11 points in the period to go with nine boards, and dropped 16 points with seven rebounds and five steals in the 10-point loss to Red Bluff.
When pairing her with fellow forward Ashlee Lewis, Adkins is a force in the paint. Even when Lewis was in foul trouble and Adkins was left alone, there wasn’t many players who would have the upper hand.
“They’re both in their third year on varsity and they’ve really grown together and become a matchup nightmare,” West Valley coach Lenny Ehn said following the win over Sutter. “Both have a mid-range shot, both are aggressive to the basket and teams can’t match up with two 6-footers who can put the ball on the floor and post up and shoot.”
Black Rose Coffee & Tea is a sponsor for the Player of the Week for the Boys & Girls Basketball season and Adkins earned a free drink coupon, delivered by the Shasta County Sports staff, for her efforts.
