There were four Shasta County boys basketball teams to go perfect last week, including Anderson, Foothill and Fall River. But Shasta’s perfect week included righting the ship against Red Bluff after a dismal first half and then using that momentum as a springboard to – finally – beat cross-town rival Enterprise in a thrilling 71-68 overtime victory.
The Wolves are this week’s Tri Counties Bank Boys Basketball Team of the Week as the regular season hits its final week and playoffs loom.
Jordan Freilich’s bunch fell behind by double digits against the Spartans on Tuesday as the coach began shuffling lineups to find the right combination. The Wolves got 19 from senior JT Beasley and Simon Turner added 14 as Shasta erased a 23-20 halftime deficit and exploded with a 22-point third period en route to a 56-42 victory.
The Wolves used that win as confidence coming into their Senior Night showdown with the Hornets, looking for their first win over the Black and Gold this season.
Shasta got a career night from James Weaver, the Wolves’ star running back, as the junior dropped 26 on the Hornets while taking on primary defensive duties guarding Demarreya Lewis-Cooper.
Down two with seconds remaining, Turner buried two free throws to send the game to overtime, where Weaver hit a go-ahead 3-pointers (his fifth of the game) and the Wolves ended the skid against Enterprise.
Shasta closes the season at Pleasant Valley on Tuesday and at Foothill on Friday before tackling playoffs – and a possibly fifth meeting against Enterprise.
