Tri Counties Bank Boys Basketball Team of the Week: Central Valley Falcons

Central Valley is making the most of its limited opportunities in this shortened pandemic season.

To get on the basketball court was a journey in itself, coach Colin Carr said, and to win their season-opener against Northern Athletic League foe Anderson Thursday unlocked a different level of excitement and success.

The Falcons beat Anderson 59-55 at home, getting contributions from all seven players who touched the court and were named the Tri Counties Bank Boys Basketball Team of the Week for the second week of the prep basketball season.

“The message this year is simple … nothing less than your best effort and enjoy every moment because it is short,” Carr said. “We were able to beat Anderson because they played extremely hard with enthusiasm and joy. When players play like that you usually get rewarded.”

Only two players scored in double figures in the game — Willie Mowry scored 12 points and the Falcons were led by junior varsity returner Brandon Abbott, who poured in a game-high 28 points in the victory. The Falcons led after every quarter but Abbott came alive in the fourth when the game got close, scoring 14 points in the period on 5-of-5 shooting from the free throw line to lead CV to a 1-0 start. Abbott was 9-of-11 from the charity stripe in the game.

Despite only playing seven of the nine players on the roster, Carr expressed his gratitude for his team to find a way to win when circumstances weren’t optimal.

“They didn’t show one hint of being tired. They just competed extremely hard and showed big time toughness,” Carr said. “I couldn’t be more proud. As coaches, that’s what makes us content. They exceeded the expectations in that game.”
