Jackson leads Shasta girls to 56-39 league-opening win over Chico

Before Tuesday’s Eastern Athletic League opening, Shasta coach Alicia Dahl talked about how her young Wolves’ squad was learning to play together as a team.

The group of mainly sophomores and juniors have struggled, at times, to play as a unit in a sub-.500 preseason.

Against Chico on Tuesday, the Wolves (7-8, 1-0 EAL) showed flashes of what their coach wants in a 56-39 over the Panthers (8-10, 0-1).

Harlan Carter Invitational girls preview

With a full week or more under our belts, it’s time for the ladies. The 45th annual Harlan Carter basketball tournament tips off Thursday at Shasta High School and runs through the championship game on Saturday. The Enterprise Hornets are defending champions and look to make it two in a row. They open against Willows, while fellow district school Foothill opens with Placer and the host Shasta Wolves have Eureka at 7 p.m. Thursday in the marquee game. Other schools include Chico and Sacramento High.

The girls got next. That’s right, it’s the girls turn to shine as the 45th annual Harlan Carter girls basketball tournament tips off Thursday at Shasta High School. The Shasta Union High School District trio – Shasta, Foothill and Enterprise – are joined by Placer, Chico, Eureka, Willows and Sacramento for this weekend’s action.
