Sierra Pacific Industries College Player of the Week: Daniel Lewis

No one, not even Daniel Lewis expected Shasta College to turn to its third-string quarterback against the No. 4 team in the state.

No one, not even student-assistant coach Daniel Lewis expected Shasta College to turn to its third-string quarterback against the No. 4 team in the state. But there was Lewis running down the stadium from the coaching booth in the third quarter, ready to strap it up against perennial national powerhouse Butte College.

Starting quarterback Hoku-Lani Wickard injured his shoulder on the first play of the second half and backup Kody Karpinski hadn’t practiced all week with bruised rib cage from the loss to American River the week before. That forced Lewis onto the field for the first time this season.

“I was nervous all day, don’t get nervous very often,” Lewis said. “I had this feeling something was going to happen, I came down, no nerves or nothing and came down and kind of winged it. Thank Jesus he was there because I was just winging it.”

Lewis, entering down 26-14, sparked life in the Knights. He moved Shasta inside Butte’s 25-yard line in three of his four possessions and threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Barry Bolden to cut it to 26-21 with 5:45 left. Shasta’s defense gave up a long score and Lewis couldn’t get the chance to be the hero and pull off the upset. However, he did earn the Sierra Pacific Industries College Player of the Week in the game on sophomore night.

Lewis, the player-turned-coach, back to player again, in his only action of the year, completed 12 of 20 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown in the 33-21 loss to No. 4 Butte Saturday.
