A performance that was sure to turn heads, Torren Calhoun-Ray couldn’t be stopped Saturday against College of the Sequoias.
The sophomore defensive end recorded four of the Knights’ five sacks on the day, using his speed, length, strength and talent to push, rip and swim his way to Sequoias quarterback Gus Villareal, who is likely still having nightmares of No. 58 in his face.
“They were talking right before the game about how we were slow and all types and stuff and their coach said they had the best D-line in the state so we had to show them something,” Calhoun-Ray said following the game.
Calhoun-Ray is the Sierra Pacific Industries College Player of the Game in the 20-7 win over the 23rd ranked Sequoias team that entered 3-1 on the year. Three of his sacks came in the first half and one of them was with Sequoias knocking on the door at the 5-yard line. Calhoun-Ray’s third down sack backed the Giants up 10 yards and they missed the following 33-yard field goal.
That makes 6.5 sacks on the year for Calhoun-Ray, which leads the team, and ranks seventh in the state in sacks. He’s a major reason why the Knights rank second in the state in both scoring defense (9.4 points per game) and sacks (21).
