The West Valley Eagles football team has been a force on the Northern Section scene for quite a long time.
Still, Greg Grandell’s bunch did something this season that’s never been done at The Pasture – go undefeated in the regular season.
The Eagles capped a 10-0 season last week with a 13-7 win over Northern Athletic League foe Lassen, securing the No. 1 seed in a loaded Division III bracket and earning the Shasta County Sports Team of the Week honors to boot.
West Valley opened the season with a Week Sub-Zero win over Shasta and followed that up with wins over the other two of Redding’s Big Three – Foothill and Enterprise – before dispatching Red Bluff, Central Valley, Orland, Anderson, Corning and the Grizzlies. Along the way, West Valley also earned a forfeit victory over Yreka.
“I’ve coached for 35 years…never been 10-0,” West Valley head coach Greg Grandell told Shasta County Sports. “It’s obviously cool for me, but I’m more happy for the school and the kids, it’s more of them than me.”
And unlike last year when MVP Bailey Sulzer was a dominant force in leading the Eagles to a Section title and NorCal Bowl game, the Eagles have a multi-pronged attack led by Cade Lambert, but complemented offensively by Josh Aguilar, Kitt McCloughan, Wyatt Reginato, Hayden Boyes and a stout offensive line. Defensively, Lambert is the leader of a group including Garrett Thibodeau, Jacob Johnston and others allow 12 points per game.
The Eagles continue their quest for perfection as the No. 1 seed when playoffs start on Nov. 15. Until then, the Eagles can savor perfection – 10-0.
