Shasta County Sports Report – Jan. 13-19

Here’s a daily recap of prep sports action around Shasta County reported to MaxPreps or the SCS staff. We will update the scores and highlights daily (with the newer games on the top). We invite coaches to send in scores and game information at

Wednesday, Jan. 15

Prep girls soccer

Foothill 2, Enterprise 0
The Cougars scored both goals in the first half to improve to 6-5-1 overall and 1-1 in EAL. Enterprise dropped to 4-7-1 overall and 0-2 in EAL.

Shasta 3, Red Bluff 0
The Wolves got two goals from Marie Johnson and one from Mia Flemming while Kaitlynn Cox had two assists. Avery Harbour got the shutout in goal for Shasta (9-2, 2-0 EAL).

Prep boys soccer

Red Bluff 1, Shasta 0
The Wolves lost on the road to fall to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Eastern Athletic League play. Red Bluff is 9-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in EAL.

Tuesday, Jan. 14

Prep boys basketball

Chico 56, Enterprise 55
Marvelous Owens score on a putback with 1.2 seconds left to give the Panthers the 56-55 win over the Hornets. Owens finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.

Enterprise (11-7, 0-2 EAL) used an 18-10 second period to pull even with Chico and the teams were knotted at 42 after the third period.

The Hornets host Shasta on Thursday at Manatowa Gymnasium.

Shasta 66, Red Bluff 49
The Wolves got 17 each from JT Beasley and Dilraj Sahota and Simon Turner chipped in 15 and 10 rebounds as Shasta moved to 1-1 in EAL play.

James Weaver added nine for Shasta, which travels to Enterprise on Thursday.

Fall River 60, Etna 49
The Bulldogs outscored the Lions in every quarter en route to the 14-point victory.

Lassen 60, West Valley 51
Marcus Francescut scored 11 and grabbed 10 boards and Hayden Boyes added 10 but it wasn’t enough for the Eagles on the road.

Lassen’s Neil Growdon scored 19 and Ryan Del Carlo added 14.

Hamilton 49, Redding Christian 47, OT
The Braves got 20 points from Manny Rios, outscoring the Lions 5-43 in the extra period.

American Christian 75, Paradise Adventist 37
The Eagles blitzed to a 46-16 halftime edge and didn’t look back.

Prep girls basketball

U-Prep 45, Anderson 33
The Panthers got 20 points from sophomore Melanie Lindsey in the Northern Athletic League win.

U-Prep outscored the Cubs 30-11 in the second and third periods to grab the lead at home. Lindsey also drained four 3-pointers for the Panthers, who are still without Jordan McCoy and Kaleia Mizuta.

Maya Sammut added eight points, Emily Cox had seven and Kylie Hokanson chipped in six for U-Prep (12-7, 3-0 NAL), which travels to West Valley on Friday.

Fall River 43, Etna 28
The Bulldogs led by 10, 28-18, at half and held the Lions to 10 points in the second half.

Mercy 33, Burney 29
The Warriors got 15 points from Jaime Kuchle in the win.
Burney led 16-13 at half, but wa ouscroed 11-8 in the third and 9-5 in the fourth period.

Enterprise 62, Chico 46
Alissa Terras scored 17 and Kylie Mendes added 16 for the Hornets at home. Mianna Saechao, Jacey Whetstone and Natalie Mendes each added eight for Enterprise.

Nine players scored for Chico with sophomore Talysha Wilkerson leading the way with eight and junior Tessa Kinney adding seven.

West Valley 48, Lassen 38
The Eagles got 17 from sophomore Madalynn Bassett, including four 3-pointers, and junior Kendall Brown added 12 in the 10-point win.

Pleasant Valley 57, Foothill 53, OT
The Vikings got a game-high 25 points from Shaley Vieg as PV took the road win in overtime. The Vikings trailed 26-19 at the half.

Emma Roach led Foothill with 12 points and Melissa Mitchell chipped in eight. Hayden Toney had nine points on a trio of 3-pointers.

Yreka 51, Central Valley 47
The Falcons fell to 0-2 in NAL play with the road loss.

Prep boys soccer

West Valley 2, Lassen 2
The Eagles and Grizzlies played to a draw with Artur Schley scoring both goals for West Valley.

Anderson 8, Central Valley 0
The Cubs shut out the Falcons to move to 11-1-1 overall and 1-0 in NAL play.

U-Prep 3, Yreka 0
The Panthers scored one goal in the first half and two in the second half. Goals were scored by Kenta Smith, Micha Saiki and Sawyer Bonnin while Bonnin, Dawson Sommers and Dean Farber each had an assist. Cory Smith had three saves in goal for U-Prep (8-5-1, 1-0 NAL).

Durham 4, Redding Christian 1
The Lions fell to 0-8 on the season.

Prep girls soccer

U-Prep 7, Yreka 0
Celeste Frey scored twice and the Panthers got one goal apiece from Ellie Farber, Isabel Lendman, Amber Anderson, Rebecca Gaido and Ryanne Ampi in the blowout win. Savannah Leak had a pair of assists and Farber, Lendman, Ampi each had an assist. Kylie Walsh had two saves in goal for U-Prep (13-0-1, 1-0 NAL).

West Valley 6, Lassen 0
The Eagles got a pair of goals from Bianca Jones and Samantha Finnegan while Kalie Doane and Brooke Keown each scored a goal. Alyssa Sheats got the shutout in goal for West Valley (7-3-3, 1-0 NAL).

Anderson 8, Central Valley 0
The Cubs on big after leading 5-0 at halftime. Anderson moves to 3-10 overall and 1-0 in NAL.

Monday, Jan. 13

Prep girls basketball

U-Prep 35, Oroville 28
The Panthers got an upper division home win over the Tigers, leading 21-14 at half and pulling out the low-scoring win.

Aaron Williams has been involved in the North State sports scene for nearly two decades. He spent eight years as the Sports Editor for the local newspaper and another four more as the voice of high school football on the radio. Williams has coached various sports at the high school level over the past decade, most recently at Shasta High, and is also the public address announcer for the Shasta College football and basketball teams.
