Shasta County Sports Report: Dec. 23-Jan. 4

Here’s a daily recap of prep sports action around Shasta County reported to MaxPreps or the SCS staff. We will update the scores and highlights daily (with the newer games on the top). We invite coaches to send in scores and game information at shastacountysports@gmail.com.

Saturday, Jan. 4

Prep wrestling

West Valley placed second out of 33 schools at the Nor-Cal Beast of the North Tournament at Anderson Friday and Saturday. The defending champion Eagles finished second to Orland. The top five teams were 1 Orland 192, followed by West Valley (183), Casa Grande (182), Foothill (151.5), and Will C. Wood (141).

Champions for West Valley included Connor Edwards at 132 with 3 pins, Rocky Raby at 160 with four pins, and Cade Lambert at 182 with 4 pins. Lambert was named the outstanding Upper Weight Wrestler. West Valley had three runners-up in Caden Arlandson at 132, Niall Raby at 138, and Jacob Johnston at 170. Chase Colgate 120 was 4th and Henry Harding 220 was 7th for the Eagles. West Valley will compete at the Tim Brown Memorial Tournament in Sacramento next Friday and Saturday.

Prep girls basketball

Shasta 50, West Valley 40
The Wolves beat the Eagles in the West Valley New Years Hoops Tournament final. Shasta’s Ava Jackson scored 18 points on four 3s and Isabelle Smith scored 15 points.

The Eagles’ Maddie Bassett scored 11 points and Jasee Heacock scored 10 points.

Central Valley 47, Anderson 32
The Falcons beat the Cubs in the West Valley Tournament seventh place game. CV improves to 8-10 and Anderson drops to 3-14.

Fall River 57, Butte Valley 9
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-1 lead after the opening quarter and never looked back in the Etna Tournament. Rylee Pevehouse scored 13 points and Ciena Greggory scored 12 points. Fall River (9-3) plays at Redding Christian Wednesday.

Prep boys basketball

Shasta 69, Gridley 42
The Wolves won the Oroville Tournament, outscoring the Bulldogs 35-18 by halftime. Dilraj Sahota scored 14 points, JT Beasley scored 12 points and dished seven assists, James Weaver scored 11 points and Jacob Singleton added 10 points.

Anderson 36, Yreka 34
The Cubs won the Corning Shootout over the Miners. Jesse Brophy was named the tournament MVP. Anderson improves to 9-6 overall.

Foothill 63, Arcata 55
The Cougars outscored the Tigers 17-10 in the fourth quarter to win on the road. Josiah Palumbo and Luke Lindsey each scored 17 points and Nick Dore added 11 points. Brandon McCracken grabbed 12 rebounds. Foothill is 14-2 and hosts Anderson on Tuesday.

Central Valley 76, Fortuna 72
The Falcons won in the Corning Shootout. Dojah Alido dropped 29 points while Nawoj Cawker scored 18 points and Shakur Thomas scored 11 points for CV (7-7).

Friday, Jan. 3

Prep boys basketball

Yreka 57, Central Valley 48
The Falcons lost in the Corning Shootout. Dojah Alido scored 16 points and Nawoj Cawker scored eight points for CV (6-7).

Shasta 64, Lassen 59
The Wolves had four players in double figures to win at the Oroville Tournament semifinals. Armal Dhinsa scored 17 points, James Weaver added 12 points, JT Beasley chipped in with 11 points and Dilraj Sahota scored 10 points. Simon Turner grabbed 11 rebounds for Shasta (11-5).

Anderson 55, Fortuna 52
The Cubs won in the semifinals of the Corning Shootout. Jesse Brophy scored 18 points and Anthony Ballestin added 12 points for Anderson (8-6).

Fall River 56, Trinity 41
The Bulldogs outscored the Wolves 31-17 in the middle quarters to win in the semifinals of the Etna Tournament.

Prep girls basketball

West Valley 52, Sutter 44
The Eagles won in the semifinals of their own tournament. Maddie Bassett scored 14 points and Lexi Proscher had 12 points. West Valley plays Shasta for the tourney title Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Shasta 62, Red Bluff 49
The Wolves outscored the Spartans 20-9 in the opening quarter to win in the semifinals for the West Valley tournament. Shasta improves to 9-5 overall.

Lassen 59, Central Valley 44
The Falcons were outscored 33-20 in the middle quarters to lose in the West Valley Tournament.

Redding Christian 43, U-Prep 18
The Lions won in the semifinals of the Lady Hornet Classic. U-Prep’s Melanie Lindsey scored 11 points.

Willows 72, Foothill 41
The Cougars fell in the semifinals of the Lady Hornet Classic. Foothill was led by Maddie Matthews, who scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Thursday, Jan. 2

Prep boys basketball

Shasta 55, Los Banos 32
The Wolves got 31 points from their posts as Simon Turner scored 21 and Jacob Singleton dropped 10 in the 27th Dennis Burnum Classic in Oroville. After a slow start by both clubs – the halftime score was 13-all – the Wolves pulled away, outscoring the Tigers 21-12 in the third period. JT Beasley added nine for the Wolves as Turner also had 14 rebounds.

Anderson 54, Corning 23
The Cubs won in the opening round of the Corning Tournament. Jack Ryan scored 17 points for the Cubs and Devin Armstrong scored 15 points.

Fall River 70, Butte Valley 27
The Bulldogs led 48-14 at half in the Etna Tournament and went on to win to improve to 10-2.

Prep girls basketball

West Valley 38, Chico 37
The Eagles won in the opening round of the West Valley New Years Hoops Tournament behind Maddie Steele’s nine points and Lexi Proscher’s eight points. West Valley plays Sutter Friday at 8 p.m.

Red Bluff 51, Central Valley 38
The Falcons lost to the Spartans after being outscored 17-4 in the final period. Alyvia Mackey scored 18 points to lead Red Bluff, which plays Shasta in the semifinals Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Shasta 48, Lassen 42
The Wolves led 25-12 at halftime and hung on to win and advance to the semis of the West Valley New Years Hoops Tournament to play Red Bluff. The Wolves improve to 8-5.

Monday, Dec. 30

Prep girls basketball

El Segundo 60, Enterprise 39
The Hornets took eighth place in the Opal bracket of the West Coast Jamboree. Miannna Saechao scored 13 points and Heather Alexander scored 10 points for Enterprise (7-7).

Liberty Ranch 50, Central Valley 47
The Falcons lost in the fifth place game of the Ivory bracket of the West Coast Jamboree.

Tennnyson 36, Anderson 27
The Cubs lost in the seventh place game of the Amber bracket of the West Coast Jamboree. Averi Feusi scored eight points to lead the Cubs.

Claremont 41, U-Prep 30
The Panthers lost in the Garden Grove Tournament. Melanie Lindsey scored 12 points and Ashlee Kraft scored eight points.

Saturday, Dec. 28

Prep boys basketball

Foothill 50, Nevada Union 39
The Cougars outscored the Miners 26-13 in the middle quarters to take fifth place at the Kendall Arnett Tournament at Placer High School. Tommy Jensen scored 13 points to lead the Cougars, who had 10 players score in the game. Foothill improves to 13-2 and plays Jan. 4 at Arcata High School.

Central Valley 58, Rio Linda 49
The Falcons led 27-19 at half and held on to win in the consolation semifinals of the Ivory bracket at the West Coast Jamboree.

American 51, Enterprise 40
The Hornets trailed 27-10 at half in the consolation semifinal of the Opal bracket at the West Coast Jamboree. Natalie Mendes scored 11 points to lead the Hornets while Mianna Saechao scored nine points.

Friday, Dec. 27

Prep boys basketball

Foothill 53, Del Oro 48
The Cougars won in the consolation semifinal of the Kendall Arnett Invite at Placer High School. Foothill led 30-18 at half and held on to win despite being outscored 20-12 in the fourth quarter. Josiah Palumbo scored 12 points and had seven rebounds, Nick Dore scored 12 points, Bekdoo Lewis scored 10 points and Brandon McCracken grabbed nine rebounds.

Campolindo 61, Central Valley 41
The Falcons lost in the opening round of the Ivory bracket of the West Coast Jamboree.

U-Prep 35, Burbank 30
The Panthers won in the opening round of the Garden Grove Tournament.

Anderson 51, Holy Names 27
The Cubs won in the opening round of the Amber bracket of the West Coast Jamboree. Anderson outscored Holy Names 21-3 in the third quarter and got 19 points from Kolby Friermood and 13 points from Danika Scott.

Colfax 54, Enterprise 37
The Hornets lost in the opening round of the Opal bracket of the West Coast Jamboree.

Thursday, Dec. 26

Prep boys basketball

Del Campo 66, Foothill 51
The Cougars trailed 26-25 at half but was outscored 25-13 in the fourth quarter to lose in the opening round of the Kendall Arnett Invite at Placer High School. Bekdoo Lewis scored 17 points and totaling a team-high eight rebounds and Hunter Edwards scored 13 points. Brandon McCracken pulled down seven boards. Foothill shot 6 of 24 from 3 and shot 31 percent from the field.
