You know that old adage about about the size of the fight in the dog?
Yeah, well U-Prep’s Riley Seay epitomizes that chestnut. The Panthers running back/cornerback stands but 5-foot-5 inches tall (5-5, 145), but pound-for-pound and inch-for-inch there might not be a tougher football player in the North State.
Seay helped will U-Prep to a 49-48 opening-night win on Friday over the visiting Pierce Bears. He scored three touchdowns and was instrumental in a wild-game that went back and forth until the final whistle. For his efforts, Seay is the Shasta County Sports Player of the Week for Week Zero.
The senior got the home team on the board right out of the gate as Seay took the opening kickoff 80 yards to the house.
The see-saw affair saw the Bears take a 21-point lead into intermission, but Seay was instrumental in getting the hosts back in the game, catching two Trevor Trueblood TD passes to end the third period knotted at 35.
“Our kids showed that tenacity, that I didn’t even know we had,” coach Darren Trueblood told Shasta County Sports after the game. “We could have rolled over in the third quarter and got beat by 28, but these kids were here to play.”
And that was epitomized by Seay. He finished with 32 yards rushing on seven carries, but added 97 yards receiving on three catches, including a long of 50 yards. He added 139 yards on returns (95 kickoff and 44 punt) for 268 all-purpose yards.
Add in the three tackles and one sack and it was a full night for the Panthers leader.
