In this shortened high school basketball season, it’s nice to get off to a hot start. No one has exemplified that more than Shasta’s Isabelle Smith. The Wolves senior is averaged 23 over this first week of action and this week’s Shasta County Sports Girls Basketball Player of the Week.
Yes, the sample size is small – Shasta is 1-1 with a win over Red Bluff and a 11-point loss to rival Enterprise – but the four-year varsity player is the lone player in Shasta County to drop 20 on consecutive nights last week.
Smith led the Wolves in their 64-53 loss Tuesday to rival Enterprise, scoring 13 of her team-high 25 points in the fourth quarter. Shasta was outscored 20-10 in the third period, but Smith, who can run point or bang down low, led the Wolves’ comeback effort.
On Thursday, Shasta got in the win column with a 63-33 victory over the Spartans. Smith again paced the Wolves, dropping 21 including 12 in the first half as the visitors raced out to a 35-17 edge at intermission.
Shasta is back in action Tuesday, hosting 1-1 Foothill at Harlan Carter Gym.
