Two weeks ago, the Shasta College defense looked lost.

Broken plays. Third down struggles. Missed assignments.

The Knights went into the season with talent and high expectations. But the “Green Shirts” had to wait until the third game of the season to get that one big play that caused everyone’s confidence to surface. Sophomore free safety Noah Benson provided that spark against Diablo Valley College Saturday, intercepting a third-quarter pass for the first of three takeaways on the day and the Knights upset No. 22 DVC 20-9 at home. Benson was named the Redding Rancheria Player of the Game.

“Noah has done a wonderful job taking on a leadership role on our defense and in the secondary,” said Knights defensive coordinator Anthony Cavalli. “He’s putting in the tie off the field studying his opponents and it showed this game with his two big plays in the fourth quarter.”

Benson came to Redding during the odd four-game Spring 2021 season during COVID and has since been a difference maker for the Knights. He’s known as a hard-hitting free safety but he might be able to add “ball-hawking” to his resume after intercepting two passes Saturday. Benson totaled three tackles in the game and his second pick sealed the upset victory as he hauled in a fourth-and-12 pass from Jordan Cooke that sailed over his receiver.

OTHERS:

Braden Rohde | DE
Rohde had a second straight disruptive game, finishing with three tackles – two for a loss of three yards – one sack and a fumble recovery.

Entire Defense
The Knights came to play, causing three turnovers and a season-best 29 percent on third down (4 of 14), along with 0-for-4 on fourth down. After allowing 13 of 16 third down conversions in Week 1, Shasta has allowed 9 of 28 in the two games since, including 1 of 7 on fourth down.

Gabe Curtis | QB
Curtis’ dual threat ability continues to be a difference maker for the offense. He carried the ball 20 times for 83 yards and scored a 4-yard TD late in the fourth quarter to put the Knights ahead two scores. He also threw for 106 yards and a touchdown.

Cam Williams | WR
Williams led the Knights in receiving with three catches for 85 yards and a TD, which came on a 61-yard screen where he had the vision and the patience to let his blockers pave the way for him and allow to zig zag down the sideline for a score.
