There’s fast and then there’s Marquice Crowell’s speed.
The Anderson senior showed why he’s one of the top players in the Northern Section and Shasta County Friday night in the 28-3 win over Gridley in the Tri Counties Bank Game of the Week. Crowell caught three passes and burned the Gridley defenders by turning them into touchdowns to be named the Redding Rancheria Player of the Game.
It’s what you would expect from a third-year varsity player, who has been turning heads since he starred for under the lights for the Cubs as a sophomore. He finished Fridayy’s win over Gridley with three catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns and added a pair of tackles on defense — one was as touchdown saving tackle where he caught up to the ball carrier breaking free in the middle of the field and nearly forced a fumble. Again, it was his speed that gave him the chance to catch up with him.
Gridley would end up with only a field goal in the game.
Both of the touchdown catches came on go-routes and Crowell was able to stay around the numbers and adjust in the air to Gator Wilson’s pass with plenty of space to catch in stride and sprint to the end zone. He even slipped a tackle on the second touchdown to show he’s one of the more deadly aerial threats in the North State. Crowell has eight touchdowns on 20 catches for 526 yards on the year.
It helps having another top athlete to go against in practice — either as a wide receiver or defensive back. Christian Teague and Crowell make each other better and it’s paying off, Crowell said.
“We push each other in practice all of the time,” Crowell said of him and Teague following the game. “We always challenge each other in one-on-one, push each other to get better, get faster, get stronger and we definitely have our route running as pristine as we can.”
Crowell will have a chance to earn back-to-back Redding Rancheria Player of the Game awards with Anderson playing at rival West Valley Friday night in the South County Collision and the Tri Counties Bank Game of the Week.
