Northern Section Basketball Power Rankings

With mid-season upon us and league play commencing, Shasta County Sports and the Chico Enterprise-Record teamed up to present weekly boys and girls basketball rankings.

T.J. Holmes and Aaron Williams of Shasta County Sports, and Sharon Martin and Will Denner of the Chico E-R will rank their Top 20 boys and girls teams. The average of those rankings will determine the Power Rankings order each week. Shasta County Sports provides the most in-depth and comprehensive coverage of basketball in far north of the section, while the E-R blankets the southern portion of the section.

Teams are ranked and awarded points based on how that rank — 20 for first, 19 for second and so on. Those totals are averaged to get a school’s weekly power average and sorted from greatest to least.

Boys Rankings

The Foothill Cougars top this week’s Power Rankings. Bill Elliott’s team opened Eastern Athletic League play with a 63-42 dismantling of Enterprise on Friday at the Cougars’ Palace. After trailing early, Foothill used a 19-3 third-quarter run to put the game away. The Cougars have jumped to a 15-2 record while playing a challenging preseason schedule that included upper-division teams in tournaments in the Bay Area and Sacramento.

The rest of the Top 5 includes EAL teams Pleasant Valley, Enterprise, Chico and Shasta. Pierce, off to a 15-2 start, is sixth with U-Prep, Redding Christian, Gridley and Weed rounding out the Top 10.

Though sub-.500, the Pleasant Valley Vikings were the consensus No. 1 choice with Willows, Shasta, Chico and West Valley rounding out the Top 5, respectively. PV is 5-0 against Northern Section foes, including wins against three of the other top four teams.

Redding Christian, with its strong showing at the Lady Hornet Classic, sits sixth in from of the Sutter, Enterprise, Foothill and Corning. The Hornets got back guard Alissa Terras on Friday in a win over Foothill and are waiting to see how long they’ll be without the services of Abby Shoff, the No. 1 returning player in Shasta County Sports’ countdown.
