Shasta College opened NorCal Conference play Saturday against perennial power American River and fell 28-13 at home.
The Beavers were the seventh-ranked team in the CCCAA Top 25 preseason poll but had lost three in a row – to teams ranked in the top 12. But Shasta come out on the wrong end of last week’s 21 vs. 22 matchup and the defeat dropped them two spots to No. 23 in the latest poll, released Tuesday.
Knights rankings are presented by Tri Counties Bank.
The Knights are 3-2 overall and are one of four NorCal Conference teams in the Top 25, led by #16 Butte (3-3), #18 American River (3-3) and #20 Sierra (3-2).
Shasta travels to unranked Siskiyous this week for a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday in Weed in what the weather experts are predicting to be sloppy conditions due to rain.
As for the national rankings put out by JCGridiron.com, the Knights are #45 and considered a “bubble” team. Sierra is #32, Butte is #38, American River is #39 while Laney – which beat both Shasta by one point and American River by 14 – is one spot behind Shasta at #46.
