For 15 minutes, the shooting woes for the Shasta College women’s basketball team appeared to be solved.
The next 20 minutes, however, proved they weren’t.
Shasta College’s led by as many as 16 in the first half but never recovered from being on the wrong end of a 21-3 run in the second half to lose 75-63 at home to Feather River Saturday in the Sierra Pacific Industries College Game of the Week.
Five players scored for the Knights in the opening quarter, led by Jenna Wallace’s 10 points in the period. Shasta jumped out to a 24-16 advantage on Riley Wallen’s bucket at the buzzer.
A Wallace bucket followed by a Kali Cummings steal converted into a Megan Collins layup fueled a 9-2 run to stretch the Knights’ lead to 38-22 midway through the second period.
But the Golden Eagles answered by scoring 14 of the next 16 points as Serena Sanchez-Gardipe, Precious Masters and Quinnah Ryan all got in on the scoring.
Despite Shasta leading 42-36 at half, the Knights were bleeding points. Cummings buried a shot from downtown to stretch Shasta’s lead to seven. But that was the last field goal for nearly 15 minutes for the Knights, allowing Feather River to fire off a 21-2 run.
When coupled with the dry spell from the first half, Shasta was outscored 39-11 across 20 minutes.
Shasta had four players in double figures, led by Wallace’s 18 points. Riley Wallen scored 15 points, Megan Collins scored 13 points and Kali Cummings scored 10 points.
The Knights fall to 0-2 in Golden Valley Conference play and go on the road Saturday to Butte College.
