IT’S BACK: Redding 3 on 3 hoops tournament returns June 5-6, registration open

The pandemic might have put most of the sports world on hold for a year but it couldn’t hold off the annual Redding 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament for one more summer.

Unite Environmental Camp is bringing the 25th edition of the Redding 3 on 3 back to the Redding Civic Auditorium blacktop on June 5-6. The tournament serves as a Redding staple in the athletic community and hoopers anywhere from boys and girls 8 to adults in their 30s, 40s and even 50s will put their skills on display for the event that acts as a kickoff to summer.

“We are really excited to be bringing back one of the big events Shasta County is known for,” said Scott Alexander, the tournament organizer who also coaches basketball at Redding Christian. “I think the basketball community in Redding can’t wait for June 5 & 6.”

The Shasta County Sports crew and Lithia Chevrolet of Redding are title sponsors for the event, which will donate its proceeds to benefit the non-profit organization Unite Environmental Camp. The Unite Camp Outdoor School Program provides innovative and collaborative leadership which enables students to learn science and interpersonal skills in a fun and active outdoor setting.

Team registration is $175 for a team of 3 to 5 players until May 20, then the prices increases to $200 per team before closing sign-ups at 5 p.m. on May 31. Divisions are set by age year from 8/9 to 10-18, adding a 35+ division as well as competitive divisions for adults: top flight male and female and both male over 6-feet and under 6-feet.

With the pandemic putting a wrench into normal life, Alexander thinks this year could be even better because of the craving to get on the court again.

“I think what stands out this year is that everyone is just ready for events like this to get going again,” he said. “It brings back a sense of normalcy to our lives.”

Winners are competing for not only community bragging rights but the red championship T-shirt that can be worn with pride. Spectators are encouraged to come out and there will be food, vendors and giveaways throughout the tournament.

Alexander is excited about the new raffle prizes with the Redding Chevy 3v3 Drawing, offering more than $5,000 in prizes. Prizes include a 3-night Shasta Lake houseboat vacation rental from Holiday Harbor, a one-night stay at the Win-River Casino’s Chairman’s Suite, and a Coreban Sonic Paddleboard, among many other prizes such as a couples membership to Everyday Fitness and a kayak from Headwaters Adventure Company.

The raffle is $5 for six raffle entries or $10 for 12. The drawing will be held on June 5 at the event but winners don’t need to be present to win.
