The first month of the Shasta College football season has been unexpected and turbulent.
The Knights had to push back their season-opener to its bye week due to air quality issues and had to evacuate campus last week from the Fawn Fire, which forced them to move their home contest against College of the Sequoias to the end of the regular season.
Four weeks in, only two games have been played. Yet, the Knights are ranked 23rd in the latest CCCAA Top 25 Poll, moving up one spot despite not playing last week.
Knights rankings are presented by Tri Counties Bank.
Shasta’s last game was a 30-29 road loss to Laney, which has won back-to-back games to rise up to No. 17 in the state poll since. Only No. 14 Butte and No. 18 American River are the other NorCal Conference teams ranked. The NorCal Conference has gone 1-9 the past two weeks. However, Sierra has received votes to be considered a bubble team.
The Knights are set to go on the road to face Chabot College Saturday in Hayward for a 2 p.m. kickoff before going to West Hills on Oct. 9. The hiccups in the season will keep the Knights going five straight weeks before playing on their home turf at Memorial Stadium. It will be Shasta’s first three-game road stretch in a single season since 2006.
For the JCGridiron.com national Dirty 30 rankings, Shasta is ranked 51st while Butte (27th), American River (32nd), Sierra (36th), Laney (39th) are noteworthy teams on the Knights’ schedule.
