Girls Basketball Team of the Week: Burney Raiders

The Raiders are experiencing a renaissance season. After another 3-0 week (the second of the year), it’s time to start considering them a contender in Division VI.

Burney is the Shasta County Sports Girls Basketball Team of the Week after winning the Burney Jamboree, taking down Big Valley, Weed and Maxwell in consecutive days by an average of 24 points per game.

The Raiders beat Big Valley 51-42 in the opener, topped Weed 54-31 and demolished Maxwell 71-30 behind a heavy dose of junior Kiley Tiran and a supporting cast where seven of their eight players scored in two of the three games. Not only are the Raiders tournament champs a second time this season (won the Princeton Tournament to start the year) but they ended last week with six double-digit wins already this year — matching the amount from 2017-18.

Burney is on a roll, jumping out to a 9-2 start this season (following Monday night’s win over Greenville), tying last year’s mark for wins. It looks like Burney is well on its way to a winning season, something that hasn’t happened for the Raiders since 2008-09.

Across the three games last week, Tiran averaged 23.3 points and 6.7 steals per game.
