Basketball playoff points released, four local teams slotted as top seeds

The final playoff points are out for the Northern Section boys and girls basketball.

For the boys, Shasta County teams Foothill (Division III) and Redding Christian (D-VI) are the top seeds in their respective divisions while Enterprise (D-III) and Fall River (D-VI) are the local teams slotted at the No. 1 seeds for the girls.

The regular season ends Friday with the basketball seeding meeting taking place Saturday. Each division has a maximum number of teams to qualify for each division but teams can opt-out.

The playoff point formula calculates is a three-part system, all with equal weight between overall record, division record and strength of schedule. Teams rank based upon a point score for each category and then added up to get their final rank. Teams can also flip with the team above it based on head-to-head as long as it is within two total playoff points. Teams can only flip once.

When teams are seeded, the top criteria is teams in the division can’t be seeded outside of league finish but it only applies to teams within the same league. For example: the first place team in League A could still be seeded behind the third place team in League B based on playoff points.

The top two seeded teams will get home court advantage through to the Northern Section basketball championships, which are held at a neutral site on Feb. 28 at a southern site (likely Butte College) and Feb. 29 at a northern site (likely Shasta College). The locations for each division will be determined at a later date, depending on who the top four seeds are in each division. Though, the section will likely keep the boys and girls together for each division.
