The old coach’s axiom says you want to be playing your best ball at the end of the year, not the start.
The Shasta Wolves are right there, especially after a 2-0 week to end the regular season and heading into the Northern Section Division III playoffs with the No. 4 seed and momentum. The Wolves exacted revenge over Enterprise on Tuesday and then beat Red Bluff in a statement game and earned the the Astro Jump Boys Basketball Team of the Week. It’s the second time the Wolves have earned the honors.
Shasta (15-12, 5-5 Eastern Athletic League) lost to Enterprise 51-42 on Jan. 17 in a game where the Wolves were held scoreless in the first period. Last Tuesday, Shasta made sure that feat didn’t happen as the Wolves jumped out and scored 23 in the first period before leading by 17 at the half and never looking back. Caden Cushman led the Wolves with 22 points and JT Beasley, Armal Dhinsa and Caden Turner all scored in double figures. The interesting thing about the win was the Dilraj Sahota, who one game earlier, dropped 30 in an overtime loss was limited to two points, but keyed Shasta’s attack with eight rebounds.
In the blitz of the Spartans on Senior Night, Shasta fueled its attack with a bit of revenge after an exceedingly physical game in Red Bluff a few weeks prior that saw several ejections and more than a handful of technicals.
The Wolves have been up and down most of the season, but have appeared to find a groove with transfers Dhinsa and Sahota rounding out one of the deepest teams in the section that also includes Simon Turner and Cade Corontzos.
Shasta hosts No. 5 Chico on Friday with the winner drawing top-seeded Pleasant Valley on Feb. 20
