Shasta County Sports’ Top 50 players are ranked, in a countdown format, based on varsity experience and potential impact for the upcoming season. Coaches’ opinions, statistics, postseason accolades, video highlights and the “eye test” were all factors in compiling the list.
The only teams included are in Shasta County – Anderson, Burney, Central Valley, Enterprise, Fall River, Foothill, Redding Christian, Shasta, U-Prep and West Valley. A reminder: just because a player plays in a lower division for a smaller school, doesn’t mean their impact is any less than a player from a large school.
The Top 50 Returning Players List is sponsored by Tri Counties Bank, a proud partner of Shasta County Sports.
9. Jack Maready | OL | Foothill | Sr.
There’s no bigger praise for an offensive lineman than when your coach calls your number. Yes, the big fella doesn’t score the TD, but football aficionados know how the running back got to pay dirt.
In Palo Cedro, the big fella getting his number called this year is Jack Maready, a 6-1, 270-pound tackle that coach Joey Brown hopes will pave the way to the end zone for Red Thunder.
“When we run the ball well, we’re running with Jack,” Brown said. “In four years, he’s grown leaps and bounds and he’s taken this year very serious.
“He’s a quiet leader, but a very physical presence.”
The 2019 All-Eastern Athletic League honorable mention can play anywhere on the line, but Brown said he’ll line up at tackle in this shortened season.
“He does a great job being physical, but can handle the speed off the edge,” the Cougars’ coach said. “We rely on him to set the edge for us.”
And bookended with Cody Sisco last year, Maready helped the Cougars amass more than 4,000 offensive yards.
The youngest of three brothers, Brown said Maready plays with the “younger brother” mentality.
“He’s like the Shasta kid (Logan) Thibodeau from last year that played with that attitude and fire,” he said. “You know, the kind that will scrap and claw to the echo of the whistle.
“(Maready) is that kid who wants to win that physical battle every time.”
And that opens a lot of holes for Foothill skill guys.
