The Shasta County Sports Top 15 Returner Rankings for Shasta College finally conclude with the top overall returner for the 2021 condensed spring season.

The rankings were released in countdown format and featured players who were on the Knights roster in 2019, some of which redshirted. The first group of Nos. 11-15 were released on Sunday, Nos. 6-10 on Monday and Tuesday was the beginning of the top five with London McCall, wrapping up with sophomore running back Tyler Boston.

Shasta College opens its four-game season in a week, hosting College of the Siskiyous at Memorial Stadium Saturday at 1 p.m.

Tyler Boston entered his true freshman season of 2019 third on the Knights’ depth chart behind returning starter Matt McCree and redshirt freshman Vinny Smith. A 2,000-yard rusher at Dixon High School and standout wrestler drew the attention of Shasta College head coach Bryon Hamilton, who saw a low-center of gravity runner with great balance and bottom-half strength.

It took a bit for Boston to regularly work his way on the field, never carrying the ball more than six times in a game until the seventh contest. But his patience paid off and Boston is not only tapping into his potential, but is the focal point of the Knights offense heading into the spring season.

“Tyler brings a lot of experience, leadership and consistency to the team,” Hamilton said. “He’s everything we want at Shasta College.”

Boston had 17 total carries through six games in 2019 before bursting on the scene for 115 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown in a 20-16 win over Feather River, which Shasta plays twice this spring. He never had a game with single-digit rushing attempts after that and exploding for 105 rushing yards on 27 carries and 128 receiving yards on six catches (235 total yards) and four touchdowns in the Golden State Bowl loss to San Francisco City College.

From third string to Shasta College’s top returner the following season shows the fortitude Boston possesses. Joining forces with No. 2 returner and running back Jayden Gordon means the Knights are featuring a dominating one-two punch in the backfield, and a powerful third if you include No. 8 returner Vinny Smith, that could decimate opponents.
